The Delaware Basin, as part of the larger Permian Basin, is the most abundant oil-producing region in the US and is generally considered the most important oilfield in the world today. The Delaware Basin, located in the southwestern US, stretches across parts of West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico.
The Permian Basin, composed of several sub-basins and platforms, is one of the largest and most complex regions in the US, containing one of the world's thickest deposits of Permian aged rock. Although it's been producing for nearly a century, the Permian Basin remains a prominent resource of oil and gas accounting for 43.6% of oil production within the US and nearly 15% of gas as of early 2022. It covers an area approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles wide in 52 counties in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.
